Got Wrestling?

Could wrestling be the next opportunity coming to Newton Falls Schools? Based on the excitement we saw this week, the answer just might be yes.

This week, 20+ Newton Falls students traveled to Liberty High School for a firsthand look at what a competitive wrestling program is all about.

Thanks to the generosity of Brian Knight, Superintendent of Liberty Local Schools, and the Liberty Leopards wrestling program, our students were welcomed matside to experience the sport up close and personal.

Students had the chance to spectate live matches, observe drills and techniques, and participate in the expo match and all the energy it brought!

They learned about the discipline, conditioning, strategy, and mental toughness that wrestling demands, and many were surprised by just how technical and engaging the sport truly is.

Most importantly, they felt the energy of a team environment built on respect, accountability, and grit.

Experiences like this are exactly how we help students discover new interests, challenge themselves, and envision what is possible.

Wrestling offers a unique combination of individual responsibility and team culture, while building confidence, resilience, and physical fitness. These are qualities that translate far beyond the mat.

The next step in this exploration will be arranging opportunities for our students to participate in “open mats” wrestling practices hosted by neighboring districts.

These sessions will allow interested students to get even closer to the action, experience live instruction and practice environments, and help us more accurately gauge student interest as we consider future programming.

While this was an exploratory experience, the level of curiosity and enthusiasm from our students speaks volumes. As we continue to look for ways to expand extracurricular and athletic opportunities at Newton Falls, wrestling is firmly on the radar.

A big thank-you to Liberty Local Schools, Superintendent Brian Knight, and the Liberty Leopards for opening their doors and investing in our students. This is what collaboration and student-centered opportunity looks like.

Got wrestling? Coming soon… to a mat near you, maybe right here in Newton Falls.

Stay tuned. Bowling’s next.
